How To Stay Safe While Traveling Abroad

Recently, the tragic terrorist attack in France on Bastille Day has once again reminded the world that traveling abroad is not as safe as it used to be, In fact there have been more than 1,000 terror attacks since the November 13 attacks which took place at various locations in Paris last year. The following guest blog post (From United Locksmith expert Ralph Good) gives insight into the steps you can take to remain safe in your travels around the world

By Ralph Goodman-

“We travel, some of us forever, to seek other places, other lives, other souls”, these are the profound words of Anaïs Nin, who was an amazing author and avid traveler. Traveling to different locations and immersing yourself in different cultures is one of the few things that make life immensely interesting and worthwhile to many people. It is important for people to travel so that they broaden their horizons and learn how to see things from different perspectives, as this enhances the way one person can experience the world.

Traveling is fun (depending on where you go) and there is a lot that can be learned from one well-planned trip to an awesome location. However, it is important that you do not become completely enthralled in all the fun you might be having, and forget that your safety and security are crucial to your continued enjoyment. There is no doubt that it can be fun to see the world with one or more people by your side, but sometimes it best to explore the world in the quiet solitude that you feel when you are alone. Speaking from personal experience, traveling alone gives you the opportunity to truly immerse yourself in another locale and another culture. Whether you decide to travel alone or not, it is important to always have safety in the back of your mind, especially since you are going to be spending a majority of your time in foreign territories. Here are some of the ways avid travelers can stay safe while they travel abroad.

Utilize Travel Insurance

This might seem inconsequential to many, but I can assure you that travel insurance comes in handy when you least expect it. It might cost a little extra to acquire travel insurance, but in the grand scheme of things it is well worth it. Travel Insurance is put in place to cover all manners of occurrences that could leave a gloomy cloud hanging over your trip. Several situations could arise that might lead to you canceling your trip early (either by choice or through no fault of yours). A situation could come about that may require that you seek medical attention in the country you are in. It is extremely difficult to prepare for unforeseen circumstances when you are traveling and seeing the world. You want to make sure you have measures in place that make these types of surprises much easier to handle.

Always Tell A Friend Where You Are

Now, before this gets misunderstood, this does not mean that you should make a Facebook status telling everyone exactly where you are and what you plan to do (that is slightly absurd). This means that you should make sure that someone you trust always has an idea of where you are, where you are going, and how they can best reach you in the case of an emergency. Anything can happen when you are globetrotting so you want to make sure that someone always knows where to look, just in case you inadvertently become the next star in the Taken series. You can utilize family members or close friends whom you regularly check in with.

Invest In Private Security

Investing in private security might seem extreme to some, but keep in mind that not everyone travels to a paradise where nothing goes wrong and the sun is always shining like the backdrop of an old Western. The world we live in is not always a safe place and there are some countries that are much more dangerous than others. If you happen to have an extremely adventurous spirit and you want to see every corner of this earth, it is a smart idea to invest in security guards and private security when you make your way into dangerous waters. Like I said, this is not a tip that everyone will relate too, but if you are planning on traveling to a war zone, or an area with severe economic depression, you might want to pay attention to this one and make use of private security.

Pay Attention To Your Surroundings, Not Your Screen

In this day and age, you will be hard pressed to find an individual who is not glued to a gadget or a device while they go about their day-to-day activities. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it can be distracting. It is crucial that you know the best times to make use of your gadgets and when not to. As I have stated above, there are many distractions that are present when you are traveling and exploring new locations. As such, you really don’t want to add another distraction (which comes in the form of your cellphone, try not to Play Pokémon Go while running around Venice). Paying attention to your surroundings helps you keep track of where you are and what is around you. It also reduces the chances of you losing any of your gadgets because they are safely stowed away.

Hide Anything Valuable

I don’t mean that you should go all Gollum over here, but I do implore you to try and keep your valuable items stowed away safely. The term valuables does not mean the same thing to everyone in the general population, since some people have different ideas about what is valuable and what is not. Regardless of what you may determine to be valuable, it is important that you keep your goods safe when you are away from home. This is doubly important when you are visiting any foreign country, because you will be a much easier target than any locals that reside there. Try your best not to flaunt anything you might have and avoid drawing attention to yourself, unless that is exactly what you want. If so, I wish you the best of luck. Remember to check that your car, hotel room, hotel safe, etc., are all locked and that you can get back into each. While under the stress and time crunches of traveling it can be very easy to get distracted and get your keys locked in the car or misplace a safe combination.

Practice Good Personal Security

Now, more so than ever before, personal security is crucial when you are traveling. The world can be a scary place at times, so you want to make sure that you are always prepared to deal with whatever situation might arise. To practice good personal security, make sure that you always look for exit routes and cover points no matter where you go (this might sound paranoid but it comes in handy.) In addition to this, you can travel with personal security devices like stun guns and Tasers. However, make sure that you verify that you can board the plan with these and that they are legal in whichever country you are traveling too.

Conclusion

Like I said, traveling can be fun but this does not mean that you should throw caution out the window and act like you’re invincible. In order for traveling to continue to be a fun experience, people need to practice safety. Hopefully these tips will help you stay safe while traveling.
